Merthyr Tydfil-v-Treforest-Sun.4th Nov.'07
Treforest were away to the much vaunted Merthyr side at Penydarren Park in the U18 South Wales Youth League.
After losing the home game 6-1 on the opening day of the season, Treforest put on a great display of attacking football which clearly suprised the team favoured to win the league.Treforest started very brightly and fought for every ball, while applying sustained pressure to their opponents back four.
The pressure paid off when Scott Badman scored from a Smith cross. Unfortunately Merthyr hit back soon after with a goal from Facey. Merthyr were now in buoyant mood and following a breakaway scored their second to put them 2-1 up at half time.
The second half saw Merthyr get an early 3rd goal, but the battling Treforest outfit replied with their second from Smith. After a superb save from Jason White, the Merthyr 'keeper released Griffiths who raced away to increase Merthyr's lead to 4-2. Treforest however, were showing immense spirit and after wave after wave of attacks Jamie White was pulled down in the box and Sam Long stepped up to make it 4-3.
Merthyr were now wilting under the sustained pressure from the away side and following good work down the left by White, Jordan Smith showed his pedigree by smashing the ball into the back of the net for a fine eaqualiser.
Sadly for the visitors ,football showed what a cruel game it can be, when with just 10 seconds left on the watch Merthyr were awarded a dubious corner from which Griffiths scored to give the hosts victory 5-4.
This was an excellent game of football, and with many of Treforest' lads only 16 years of age it augurs well for the remainder of the season and next year. Well done to all concerned
